The victim’s family blames a local extortion gang for the killing

A local Awami League leader has been killed in Cox’s Bazar’s Moheshkhali Upazila by unidentified attackers.

Ziabul Haq, a leader of Awami League’s Matorbari Union unit, was attacked around 4:30pm on Wednesday.

He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 10pm.

His younger brother, and Union Parishad Member, Sarwar Kamal, blamed a local gang for the murder but did not name anyone.

He said a local gang had been extorting money from Ziabul’s businesses for a long time and several cases had been filed against the group.

The police’s Moheshkhali station and Matarbari outpost had been notified several times about the extortion, he said.

“In continuation of the conflict, my brother was attacked with sharp weapons when he went to Bangla Bazar for business-related work,” Sarwar said.

Moheshkhali police’s Officer-in-Charge Pradeep Kumar Das said they were trying to arrest the killers.
