A mentally challenged fifth grader was allegedly raped by a school committee member in Narail on Monday.
The girl, who studies at KemongalHata Government Primary School in Lohagaraupazila went on August 5 to the committee member Kamrul's shop adjacent to the school to buy chocolates at noon. Kamrul took the girl to the store room after alluring her with food. Here he confined the girl and raped her repeatedly.
After returning home, the girl reportedly complained of pain in the stomach to her mother.
Her mother then informed the incident to the father of the child who was living in Dhaka for earning livelihood.
On August 10, the father of the girl returned home and filed a case with Lohagara police station.
The girl was admitted to the NarailSadar Hospital on the same day.
Enraged locals including hundreds of students from different institutions staged protests in front of KemongalHata Government Primary School from 10.30 pm to 1.30 am on Monday demanding the arrest of the accused.

When contacted, Md Ataur Rahman, chairman of the school committee, said they had decided to suspend Kamrul.
Probir Kumar Biswas, officer-in-charge of the police station, said Kamrul had fled the house after the case was filed.
“We are trying to arrest him soon,” he added.
Dr Moshiur Rahman Babu, medical officer of NarailSadar Hospital, said the victim had been admitted to the hospital after five days of the incident.
The facts would be determined after getting medical reports, he also said.
