2 ‘drug dealers’ killed in ‘gunfights’ in Rajshahi, Chandpur

Two suspected drug dealers have been killed in separate alleged gunfights with police in the districts of Rajshahi and Chandpur.

In Rajshahi, an alleged drug dealer called Manik, 30, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Muktarpur village of Charghat upazila, early Thursday.

According to the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Charghat police station Nazrul Islam, after receiving a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2:45am.

The criminals, sensing the presence of law-enforcers, opened fire on them - which forced them to fire back.

During the ensuing firefight, Manik sustained gunshot wounds. He was later taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead on arrival.

According to the police, Manik was wanted in 13 cases.

A pistol, a bullet, and 50 bottles of phensedyl were retrieved from the spot.

In Chandpur, a suspected drug trader was killed in a so-called gunfight with the police in Sikrutia Bridge area of Chandpur around 1:30am on Thursday. The deceased is yet to be identified.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Shahrasti police station OC Mizanur Rahman said: “On a tip-off that a huge consignment of illegal drugs would pass through Chandpur, police conducted a raid near the Sikrutia Bridge in the early hours of Thursday.

“Sensing the presence of law enforcers, a gang of culprits fired on the police team, triggering a gunfight lasting around 15 minutes.”

Later, the bullet-riddled body of a man of around 30 years of age was found at the site. He was taken to Shahrasti Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on call declared him dead on arrival.

The suspect’s body has been sent to the Chandpur morgue for an autopsy.

According to police sources, three policemen were injured in the incident. A locally- made gun, six bullets, and 83 yaba tablets were also seized from the spot.
