RAB seized firearms, ammunition and illegal drugs during separate raids

Two suspected drug peddlers were killed in “gunfights” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Tuesday.

In Rajshahi, a suspected drug peddler has been killed in a so-called gunfight with RAB in the Tarash area.

The deceased, Abdur Rashid, 45, was accused in 17 cases filed with different police stations.

Confirming the matter, Deputy Commander Major AFM Ashraful Islam of RAB 5 told the Dhaka Tribune: “On a tip off, RAB conducted an anti-drug raid in the Tarash area around 11pm on Tuesday. Sensing RAB’s presence, a gang of drug peddlers began firing at them.

“RAB forces retaliated, triggering a gunfight. Later, the body of one illegal narcotics dealer was found on the spot. Further investigation revealed that Abdur Rashid was a listed drug peddler and was accused in 17 drug and smuggling-related cases.”

RAB sources say: a foreign pistol, one magazine, two bullets, and 57 bottles of phensedyl were seized from the scene. Two RAB personnel were also injured in the incident, and are currently undergoing treatment.

In Natore, a suspected illegal narcotics dealer has been killed in a “gunfight” with RAB in Mahishbhanga Village.

The deceased, Kabil, 45, from Chargadipur Village under Baraigram upazila, was accused in 12 cases related to illegal drugs and smuggling.

Natore RAB Company Commander Shibli Mostafa confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

Shibli Mostafa said: “On a tip-off that a gang of drug peddlers is gathering in the Mahishbhanga area, for illegal narcotics trade, a RAB 5 patrol team took up positions in the Bonpara area around 11:30pm on Tuesday. The team found a few suspects loitering there.

“Sensing RAB’s presence, two of the suspects escaped the area on a motorbike. When asked to surrender, the remaining suspects began firing at the RAB team—triggering a gunfight that lasted around five minutes.”

He continued: “Later, one body was found at the scene, while the rest of the suspects managed to flee. The man was taken to Baraigram Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.”

Shibli Mostafa added that two RAB men received minor injuries in the incident.

According to RAB sources: one 7.65mm foreign pistol, 2 bullets, one bullet shell, a magazine, 280 yaba tablets, and Tk745 in cash were seized from the spot.

RAB has launched a drive to track down the suspects that escaped during the raid.
