Two suspected drug peddlers have been killed in separate incidents of “gunfights” in Natore and Narayanganj districts.
In Natore, a suspected drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The incident took place near Anchharkata intersection on Tuesday.
The deceased, Ahadul, 38, was a native of Kazipara village in Lalpur upazila.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Natore RAB 5 Camp Company Commander Shibli Mostafa said: “A RAB patrol team followed two men suspiciously loitering in the Gopalpur Railgate area of the city on a motorbike. They were carrying a white plastic sack.
“The riders met two more men in a sugarcane field near Anchharkata intersection. The RAB team approached them and asked them to surrender.”
Mostafa continued: “Sensing RAB presence, the motorbike riders escaped the area. The other two men also attempted to run away and started firing on the RAB team to cover their escape.
“RAB returned fire, triggering a gunfight that lasted around five minutes. One of the suspects managed to escape, but Ahadul was found at the scene with bullet injuries. He was taken to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.”
RAB seized one 7.65mm gun, two bullets, one magazine, two bullet shells, 57 bottles of Phensedyl, Tk475 in cash, one flashlight, one mobile phone, and a SIM card from the spot.
Adding that two RAB men were also injured during the gunfight, Mostafa said: “Ahadul was accused in eight cases in connection with illegal narcotics and smuggling.
The RAB has launched a drive to detain those that managed to escape Tuesday’s raid.
