Police arrested two persons after a case was filed following the attack
A group of locals have attacked Ratha Yatra, a major festival of the Hindu community, in Gopalganj’s Kotalipara upazila.
Police arrested two persons in connection with a case filed following the incident.
The unruly locals entered the festival venue in Tarashi village on Saturday night with sticks and assaulted six devotees.
They also vandalized several chairs and looted gold ornaments from one of the devotees.
Officials from the district administration and police force visited the spot later.
The festival committee filed a case accusing 10-15 people early on Sunday following the attack.
Two accused -- Halim Sheikh and Liakat Ali—were arrested, Kotalipara police station’s Officer-in-Charge Md Kamrul Faruk said.
He said efforts are underway to arrest the others.
Local Hindu business people halted their activities to protest the attack. They resumed their business after the upazila chairman assured them of measures against those responsible.
Festival committee General Secretary Joydeb Saha said since there was a mosque close to the venue they kept their loudspeaker off during Esha prayers.
“We have been asked to switch off the loudspeaker for 40 minutes. As we switched it on after the time was over a group of people attacked us all of a sudden.”
He demanded exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.
