A five-member committee was formed on Tuesday to investigate the allegations of rape of a schoolgirl by an intern at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The committee, led by Prof Dr NK Sinha, head of the hospital's Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department, was asked to submit its findings within seven workdays, said the hospital’s Deputy Director Dr Debopada Roy.
Debopada, who is also a member of the panel, said they started working from Tuesday. “The committee will also collect footage of the CCTV cameras in the hospital.”
On Monday, police arrested Makkam A Mahmud Mahi, a medical intern at the hospital’s ENT Department, for allegedly raping a ninth-grader girl.
Mahi, son of Mokhlesur Rahman, is from Muktagachha upazila in Mymensingh.
Kotwali police OC Golam Sadek Kawsar Dastagir said the girl was with her sick grandmother at the hospital’s Ward No 8.
According to case details, Mahi, who was on duty in Ward No 7, reportedly took the girl in the doctor’s room, saying he would help her with her grandmother’s prescription, and raped her around 3am on Monday.
After the girl told her parents about the incident in the morning, they lodged a complaint with the hospital’s Director Brig Gen AKM Mahbubul Haq.
Later in the day, police arrested Mahi.
The girl’s father filed the case at Kotwali police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on Tuesday.
The same day, Mahi was also produced before a Sylhet court that sent him to jail.
