'Why are so many police transferring so close to the city elections?'
With the city polls in Barisal, Rajshahi and Sylhet right around the corner, Bangladesh police has sought permission to transfer 15 police officers from various areas to Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP). However, the Election Commission is yet to approve the transfers, as they are suspicious of the reasons for the administrative changes at SMP.
A letter requesting the transfers, signed by AIG Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, was sent to the Election Commission on July 5.
Refusing to sign the transfer request, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder said: “Why are so many police transferring so close to the city elections? This is suspicious. I will not sign [the transfer request] until the matter is investigated.”
Later, when speaking to Additional Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman, the election commissioner said: “During the Khulna and Gazipur polls, five police officers were transferred by the Home Ministry without our permission. We objected and said the transfers were illegal, as no one can be transferred after the declaration of the election schedule without the EC’s permission. We ordered the postponement of the transfers, and the Home Ministry later took our approval.”
He added that, though police had requested approval this time, the large number of transfers had given reason for doubt, and hence the transfers were yet to be approved.
The election commissioner further said that a decision on the transfers would be taken after a thorough investigation.
The police officers who are being considered for transfer are: Liton Sharif (SI, DMP, Dhaka), BM Mehedi Hasan (SI, Munshiganj), Md Jahirul Islam-(SI, Gazipur), Md Shahin Molla(SI, Rajbari), Sheikh Sajal Hussen (SI, Madaripur), Sheikh Mofijur Rahman (SI, DMP, Dhaka), Md Tanvir Ahmed (SI, Shariyotpur), Md Aminur Rahman (SI, PBI, Dhaka), Md Sumon Miah (SI, Munshiganj), Md Mahbubul Alam Khan (SI, DMP, Dhaka), Md Imtiajur Rahman (SI, DMP, Dhaka), Md Shakhawat Imtiaj (SI, DMP, Dhaka), Md Kamrujjaman (SI, Anti terrorism unit), Sabbir Hussen (SI, Munshiganj), Md Mustafijur Rahman (SI, CID).
