'I would like to give assurance again: we will comply with all the provisions of the EC’s code of conduct in the elections'
The upcoming three city elections will be free and fair and road journeys will be comfortable during the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, Awami League General Secretary Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Friday.
The minister was speaking to journalists during a visit to the Chandra road of Gazipur’s Kaliakoir upazila.
“There will be no interference from the government, in the upcoming city polls of Sylhet, Rajshahi and Barisal,” Quader said.
Quader further said: "The Election Commission (EC) will conduct the elections, as per the people’s want.”
“We have abided by the code of conduct of the EC in both Khulna and Gazipur city polls, as no member of parliament or a minister can visit such areas during elections,” he also said.
During the city corporation elections, the Awami League general secretary never went to any of the election constituencies. On Friday, he claimed his BNP counterpart had been less judicious.
“Mirza Fakhrul Islam speaks of the level playing field, whereas they can go to the electoral area, but we can not,” he said.
“I would like to give assurance again: we will comply with all the provisions of the EC’s code of conduct in the elections,” said Quader.
On the matter of highway, the minister said: “The Deoria railway overpass work is almost complete but there are some legal matters that need to be resolved.
“During the Eid holidays, vehicles can use the under construction four lane 23 Bridge of the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
“The problem occurred in Tangail bypass has now been fixed after it was repaired and there will be no problem again due to regular maintenance. This year’s Eid journey will be much more comfortable than last year’s.”
Accompanying the minister were Dhaka Division Road (Circle) Caretaker Shabujuddin Khan, Gazipur Road Division Executive Engineer Nahin Reza, Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Harunur Rashid, Gazipur Road Division Engineer Maruf Hossain, Acting OC of Kaliakair police station Rafiqul Islam, OC (investigation) Muhammad Masud Alam.
