Suspected robber ringleader killed in Rangpur 'gunfight'

A suspected ringleader of a robber gang has been killed in a so- called gunfight with police, in the Hajirhat area of Rangpur.

The deceased is Belal Hossain, a resident of Uttam Betar Para neighbourhood in Rangpur.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Babul Hossain said: “The police received a tip- off that a gang of criminals had gathered near the Telir Bridge area, with plans to commit robbery.

“The law enforcers launched a raid in that area around 4:30am. Sensing a police presence, the criminals opened fire at the police.”

He said Belal was killed when police returned fire.

The OC added that eight policemen were also injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, Rangpur Kotwali police station OC (Investigation) Md Mokhtarul Alam said Belal was accused in 18 cases, filed over charges of robbery, murder, and mugging.

Belal’s body has been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
