The miscreants desecrated the idols when temple authorities refused to pay them a bribe
Miscreants have desecrated two idols in a temple at the Sonatala upazila of Bogra.
The incident took place on Friday morning at the Karamja Daspara village. Following the incident, locals nabbed two men with locally-made weapons and handed them over to the police.
The miscreants desecrated the idols when temple authorities refused to pay them a bribe.
Sonatala police station OC Shafirul Islam has confirmed the news of the attack. He said the police will file a case as the plaintiff.
The arrested miscreants are Thandu Miah, 28, son of Ali Akand of Shukhanpukur village of Gabtali upazila; and Dollar Khanm, 35, son of Abdul Hannan of Nawdabga village of Solantala upazila.
Locals have said the temple holds a Haribashor, every year. A group of five men came to the temple in the early morning and demanded Tk3000 for alcoholic drinks. When their request was denied, they vandalized the temple and desecrated two of its idols.
The locals also added that even Muslims donate money to the temple to host the event.
President of the Haribashor Committee Tuku Das and General Secretary Shamol Chandra Das said that the accused demand money for drugs every time an event takes place; but this time, due to funding shortages, the miscreants were not given any money, which resulted in desecration.
The two detained, have also threatened the temple’s authorities—panicking Hindu people, they said.
Moadhupur Union Parishad Chairman and President of the Sonatala Puja Committee Ashim Kurmar said he heard the news and demanded—justice from, and the arrest of all accused, to the concerned authority.
OC Shariful said: “The detained have been sent to jail and a search is going on for the remaining accused. Hindu people are afraid to file a case, which is why police has decided to file a case at the plaintiff.”
As of Friday afternoon, no case has been filed.
