RU Chhatra League General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu denied the allegations
Chhatra League Rajshahi University (RU) unit activists have assaulted the procession of a quota reform activist group, breaking one protester's leg and injuring several others.
Around 4pm Monday, the university's quota reform activists brought out a procession at the main entrance to the university on the Dhaka–Rajshahi highway.
Among the injured, Tariqul Islam, one of the leaders of the quota reform movement at RU was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital with a broken leg and a head injury.
According to eyewitnesses, around 30-40 quota reform activists were walking in a procession from the Binodpur area into the campus. Around 50-60 Chhatra League activists, led by university unit President Golam Kibria and General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu, had taken position at the university entrance.
The Chhatra League men attacked the procession when approached the gate. Protesters scattered and some were beaten up. As Tariqul fell, he was beaten with hammers and sticks. He was later rescued by the police and taken to hospital.
The movement's convener for Rajshahi University Masud Munnaf said; “We were observing a peaceful protest. Chhatra League goons attacked us in front of the police. At least 12 of our protesters were injured; of them, three are critical.”
RU Chhatra League General Secretary Faisal Ahmed Runu denied the allegations and said: “These people were trying to create chaos in the campus. We prevented them from doing so.”
University Proctor Prof Lutfur Rahman said he had heard that quota reform protesters were coming towards the campus “with sticks and weapons.”
“I heard there was a scuffle between them and Chhatra League, and someone was injured,” he added.
