With the installation, 750 metres of the bridge are now visible

The fifth span of the Padma Bridge has been installed on the 41st and 42nd piers in Munshiganj.

The procedure to place the span started around 9am and was completed by 3pm.

Padma Bridge Assistant Engineer (main bridge) Ahmed Ahsan Ullah said: “Since the weather was favourable, the Seven S (super structure) span has been installed. Now, other construction related work is being completed.

“It would take around two more days to weld the span to the bridge.”

Earlier on Thursday, the span was taken to Jazira Point of the bridge, by floating crane Tian E, from the Mawa construction yard, in Munshiganj.

Engineers said 600 metres of the bridge were visible after the installation of the fourth span. The fifth span will add another 150 metres to the bridge.

They further said each span of the bridge is 150 metres long and weighs 3,140 tons. A total of 41 spans will be installed on 42 piers.

As many as 40 of the 42 piers will be above water; the remaining two will be installed on the river bank.
