Robber ringleader killed in ‘gunfight’

Police recovered arms and ammunition from the spot

A suspected ringleader of a gang of robbers has been killed in a “gunfight” with police in Dhalarchar area under Bera upazila of Pabna district. 

Forty-two-year-old Nizam Mondol alias Nizam was the chief of an inter-district robbery gang named “Nizam Bahini,” police said.

Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gautam Kumar Biswas said:”Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in the area around 11:30pm on Saturday.

“Sensing our presence, they opened fire at us.” 

In retaliation, police fired back —injuring Nizam.

ASP Gautam said Nizam was declared dead when taken to a local hospital around 1:30am.   His body will be sent to Pabna General Morgue for an autopsy. 

Meanwhile: a foreign-made pistol, three rounds of bullets, two shells of cartridges and three machetes were recovered from the spot.   

Police said he was accused in seven murder and two kidnapping cases. He was also accused in the murder of three policemen in 2010.
