BGB deployed in Gazipur ahead of city polls

The platoons will remain on duty till June 27

A total of 29 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been deployed in Gazipur city ahead of the city corporation elections.

The border guards were deployed at different parts of the city on Sunday morning to avert any untoward incident, said Mohsin Reza, BGB public relations officer.

The platoons will remain on duty till June 27, he added.

The Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election will be held on Tuesday and the candidates may continue their campaigning till midnight on Sunday.

A total of 1,137,737 voters are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming polls for 57 general ward councillors and 19 reserved women’s seats.

Seven aspirants:Jahangir Alam of Awami League, Hasan Uddin Sarker of BNP, Md Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Fazlul Haque Minar of Islami Oikkya Jote, Md Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Farid Ahmed,are contesting the mayoral post.

Earlier, the Gazipur polls were scheduled to be held on May 15, but the High Court delayed it.

Later, the Appellate Division reviewed the High Court order and asked the Election Commission to hold the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election by June 28.
