Lightning kills two in Bagerhat

Two people, including a woman, were killed and two others injured in separate incident of lightning strikes during thunderstorms in Bagerhat’s Morelganj and Sadar upazilas on Tuesday.

In Moreljganj, Bikash Mridha, 40, son of Romendra Nath Mridha of Kumarijola village, was killed and Subhash Talukder, 48, injured when they were struck by a thunderbolt in the afternoon.

Morelganj police OC Rashedul Alam said the duo was working in a fish enclosure when the lightning strike took place, leaving them severely injured.

Bikash was declared dead on arrival at the Bagerhat Sadar Hospital. Subhash was admitted to the hospital.

In Sadar upazila, Shampa Rani Mondol, 28, wife of Bishnupada Mondol of Kapali Bandar village, was severely injured after being hit by a lightning when she was bringing the cattle back amid rain at a field near her home in the afternoon, police said.

Bemorta Union Parishad Chairman Monwar Hossain Tagar said duty doctors at the Sadar Hospital declared her dead after she was rushed there.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old housewife named Shree Debi was also injured in a separate incident of lighting strike in Joymoni Katakhal area of Mongla upazila.

Shree Debi, wife of one Sujit, was later admitted to the Upazila Health Complex in critical condition.

Body of missing fisherman found in Poshur

The body of a fisherman, who went missing during a storm in the Poshur River on Monday afternoon, was found floating on the river in Mongla upazila on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Shafiqul Islam, 30. He had fallen in the river while fishing in the upazila’s Ghol area, four kilometres away from where his body was found.

Locals and two Fire Service rescue teams recovered his body from the Sundartala area of the river in the afternoon after a 24-hour-long search, said Bagerhat Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Director Md Masud Saradar.
