Road crashes kill 8 in four districts

Eight people have been killed and at least 24 others injured in separate road accidents around the country.

In Mymensingh, two men, including a constable of the Detective Branch (DB) of Gazipur police, were killed and six injured when a truck crashed into four CNG-run auto-rickshaws near Digarkanda area in the early hours of the day.

The deceased were identified as constable Saiful Islam, 30, and driver of one of the auto-rickshaws Abul Hashem, 30.

Kotwali model police OC Mahmudul Islam said eight people were injured after the goods-laden truck had rear-ended the auto-rickshaws, parked on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway’s bypass area.

All of them were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where duty doctors pronounced two dead.

Police later impounded the truck, but the driver managed to flee.

In Jamalpur, two people were killed and five others injured when a truck collided with two auto-rickshaws on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh Highway in Chankanda area around 9:30am, said Jamalpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Md Nooruddin.

The crash had left seven people injured, he said, adding that two of them died while undergoing treatment at Jamalpur Sadar Hospital.

One of the deceased was identified as Mosharraf Hossain, 42, and the other was an eight-year-old child.

In Bogra, a child and a man were killed in separate incidents of road crashes in Dhunot and Sherpur upazilas on Wednesday morning.

Private car driver Saiful Islam, 36, died on the spot after being run over by a bus on the Dhaka-Bogra Highway in College Road area, Sherpur police said.

On the other hand, Dhunot police said four-year-old Shanto Islam was run over and killed on the spot by a locally-made automobile when he was playing near his home around 11am.

Locals caught the driver and handed him over to police later. The vehicle was also impounded by police.

In Tangail, two people were also killed and at least 13 others injured in separate road accidents in Sadar, Bhuapur and Sakhipur upazilas on Wednesday, police said.

Fifty-year-old Lal Mia died on the spot after a pickup ran over him on the Bhuapur-Tarakandi Road in Bhuapur upazila’s Tarai area in the morning.

Around 1:30pm, at least 12 people were injured when a bus overturned on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Sadar upazila’s Kandila area after the driver lost control.

All of them were rushed to Tangail General Hospital. Two of the injured were in critical condition.

Later in the day, 28-year-old Parvin Aktar was killed when the auto-rickshaw she was on collided head-on with a truck near Palashtoli Bridge in Sakhipur upazila.

Police said the accident, which also left a nine-year-old boy injured, occurred around 5:30pm.

Police also impounded the truck and detained the driver later.
