Road crashes kill 9 in four districts

At least 27 others have also been injured in the collisions

Nine people have been killed and at least 27 others injured in separate incidents in four districts around the country.

All the road accidents took place between Thursday night and Friday.

The latest casualties have taken the death toll in similar incidents in the last two days to 21.

In Chittagong, of a total of five people were killed in two separate accidents, one died in the early hours of Friday and the rest a little later in the day.

A transport worker named Sirajul Islam, 60, was killed when a covered van ran over him around 4am, in the city’s AK Khan area.

Later, around 11am, four were killed and at least 12 others injured when a truck belonging to NGS Cement Industries Ltd crashed into several rickshaws and auto-rickshaws after the driver lost control near Shah Amanat Bridge at the city’s Bakalia around 11am.

Bakalia police OC Pranab Chowdhury said three of them died on the spot.

The deceased were identified as Nargis Akhter, 35, Hasina Begum, 40, Shah Paran, 28, and Nurul Absar, 45, Assistant Sub-Inspector Alauddin Talukder of Chittagong Medical College Hospital’s (CMCH) police outpost told the Dhaka Tribune.

He said the injured were admitted to CMCH, and the truck driver and his assistant were detained later.

In Dhaka, a woman died after a bus knocked her down in front of the National Press Club in the morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Samiran Akhter Selina, 50, who was from Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj. She lived in Keraniganj.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost’s In-Charge Sub-Inspector Bachchu Miah said a speeding bus hit Samiran right after she got down from another bus, leaving her critically injured.

She was rushed to the hospital where duty doctors declared her dead around 10:35am.

In Manikganj, two people were killed and at least 12 others injured when a bus rammed into a pickup van on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Annaypur in Shibalaya upazila Thursday night.

One of the deceased was identified as pickup driver Liton Hossain, 30.

Borongail highway police Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain said the accident took place around 10pm when the bus collided with the fish-laden pickup, leaving two dead on the spot and others injured.

Police later recovered the bodies and sent them to Manikganj District Hospital.

In Noakhali, one Md Solaiman, 32, was killed and three others injured when the CNG-run auto-rickshaw they were on lost control and crashed into roadside tree on Sonapur-Subarnachar Road in Subarnachar upazila’s Al Amin Bazar area Friday evening.

Solaiman was a lecturer at the upazila’s Destiny College and an activist of the upazila Jubo League unit. The three injured were his sister, her husband and son.

His colleague at the college Rupom Chakrabarty said the accident took place around 5pm when they were returning home from Noakhali town, leaving all four passengers of the auto-rickshaw injured.

After locals rushed them to Noakhali General Hospital, duty doctors declared Solaiman dead. The other three were given first aid.

Subarnachar police OC Md Nizam Uddin said the vehicle was impounded, but its driver was yet to be detained.
