A Chittagong court has issued another arrest warrant against BNP leader Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury, the younger brother of executed war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, in a defamation case filed for making offensive remarks against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Chittagong Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court judge Md Shahidullah Kaisar issued the warrant on Sunday.
Md Belal Uddin Shah, president of Bangladesh Torikat Federation’s Fatikchhari unit, had filed the case.
Earlier in the morning, the High Court had granted a three-month bail for Giasuddin in two separate cases - one for threatening the prime minister and the other filed under the Explosive Substances Act.
On May 31, the first arrest warrant was issued against him in another case filed against 70 BNP activists and leaders, including Giasuddin, by Fatikchhari upazila Awami League unit General Secretary Nazim Uddin Mohuri.
Three more defamation cases were also filed against the BNP leader.
Besides, the court summoned Giasuddin in another case filed by Akram Hossain, a member of the ruling party’s central sub-committee.
Addressing a discussion on the 37th death anniversary of late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Giasuddin had said: "There was no one to say Inna Lillahi Wa Innailayhi Raji'un after the death of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The prime minister's fate will be even more dangerous. She has to take the responsibility of those being killed in the name of crossfire."
He also described the prime minister as a threat to the country.
A group of unidentified miscreants ransacked the house of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury at Goods Hill in the port city Wednesday night after Giasuddin's offensive remarks against the prime minister.
