Anti-narcotics drive: 54 held in eight districts

At least 54 people have been detained in separate anti-narcotic drives conducted in eight districts.

In Naogaon, Detective Branch (DB) of police detained a suspected drug peddler named Mobarok Hossain from Bodolgachhi upazila Sunday night.

DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Shamsuddin said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in Kolar Palsha village around 11pm and detained Mobarok with 100 yaba pills.”

“A case has been filed with Bodolgachhi police station against Mobarok,” the OC added.

In Khulna, police detained a total of 16 suspected drug peddlers in a drive conducted from Sunday morning till Monday morning.

Khulna Superintendent of Police (special unit) Md Anisur Rahman said a total of 50 grams of cannabis, 27 yaba pills, one litre of local liquor, and a motorcycle were recovered during the drive.

According to Khulna Metropolitan Police’s special unit, the detainees are accused in a number of drug dealing cases.

Meanwhile, 80 others were also detained on several other charges.

In Patuakhali, DB police detained two suspected drug peddlers, including a woman, in a drive conducted in Bauphal upazila.

DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khondakar Zakir Hossain said: “A suspected drug peddler named Kulsum Begum has been detained with one kilogram of cannabis, from Keshabpur area.

“Another suspected drug peddler, Md Mogbul Miyar, was detained from the same area with 1kg cannabis,” he added.

In Bagerhat, police detained a total of 48 people, including nine drug abusers, from nine upazilas from Sunday morning to early Monday.

Superintendent of Bagerhat police Pankaj Chandra Rai said certain quantities of cannabis and yaba pills have been recovered from the detainees.

In Nilphamari, police detained 34 people, including six drug peddlers, from several areas from Sunday night till early Monday.

The detained drug peddlers are Anarul Islam, 35, Newaz Sharif, 24, Zabed Ali, 35, Nobab, 32, Shariful Islam, 28, and Tutul Bhuimali, 25.

Assistant Superintendent of Nilphamari police (ASP) Md Altab Hossain said they have been detained under the Special Power Act 1974.

In Tangail, police detained 12 drug peddlers in anti-drug drives conducted in different parts of the district from Sunday night to Monday morning.

In Satkhira, police detained 40 people, including seven suspected drug traders, in anti-drug drives from Sunday night to Monday morning.

In Rajshahi, police arrested a suspected drug trader from Tatarpur area of Charghat upazila Sunday night, reports UNB.

Rajshahi police SP Md Shahidullah said the police conducted a drive around 10pm and arrested Moktar Hossain with a foreign-made pistol.

The arrestees are accused in eight cases, the SP added.
