Ten people were killed and at least 14 others injured in separate road accidents in four districts around the country between Saturday night and Sunday.

In Shariatpur, three day labourers were killed and at least nine others injured when a truck plunged into a roadside ditch in Sadar upazila’s Atong Boro Bridge area Saturday night.

The deceased were identified as Rahmat Gazi, 40, Naimul Islam, 18, and Idris Biswas, 70. All of them are from Ashasuni upazila in Satkhira.

According to the injured workers, they had come to Shariatpur from Satkhira over one-and-a-half month ago to harvest paddy.

Niaz Mohammad, deputy assistant director of Shariatpur Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the accident took place around 10:30pm when the paddy-laden truck, carrying the 12 workers, plunged into the roadside ditch after its driver lost control.

Rahmat, Naimul and Idris were killed on spot. The nine injured were admitted to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.

Sub-Inspector Kajal Kumar Nandi, in-charge of Kundarhat highway police outpost, said the Bogra-bound covered van ran over the trio around 7pm after the driver lost control and killed them on the spot.

Police impounded the covered van but the driver and his assistant fled the scene.

A case accusing the duo was also filed at Shepur police station later in the day.

Hatikumrul highway police station OC Abdul Kader Zilani said both vehicles had plunged into a roadside ditch after the collision, killing the trio.

On information, police and Fire Service officials went to the spot and recovered the bodies, he said. The injured were taken to Raiganj Upazila Health Complex.

Traffic in the area was halted for an hour after the accident.

In Netrakona, a man was killed and at least five others injured when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a covered van collided head-on on the Netrakona-Mymensingh road in Sadar upazila’s Jhausi area around 3pm Sunday.
