Three members of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) in Chattogram Hill Tracts have been arrested from the port city in connection with the killing of six people in Rangamati, including Naniarchar Upazila Chairman, Shaktimaan Chakma.

UPDF (Ganatantrik) is a breakaway faction of the UPDF, a political party that seeks to establish full autonomy in the CHT through peaceful and democratic means.

Shaktimaan, 55, also vice president of Parbattya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samity (PCJSS-MN Larma faction), was killed in a gun attack on May 3.

PCJSS-MN Larma came into being after Santu Larma-led Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), which had signed the 1997 CHT Peace Accord with the government, split during the last caretaker government’s tenure in 2007-08.

On May 4, five more people, including UPDF (Ganatantrik) President Tapan Jyoti Chakma, 50, alias Borma, were shot dead while they were going to attend the funeral of Shaktimaan.

Sukrity Chakma, 40, Kantimaoy Chakma, 35, and Jiku Chakma, 25, were arrested Monday night in connection with the six murders.

Sukrity was arrested from the city’s polytechnic area under Bayezid police station, while the other two were arrested in the EPZ area under the EPZ police station.
