Khulna University’s Fisheries and Marine Resources Technology Discipline (FMRT) on Wednesday signed a deal with Keya Group, a business conglomerate, for performing joint research aimed at developing the promising industry of crab farming in Bangladesh.
FMRT chief Professor Dr Ghausiatur Reza Banu signed the agreement with Keya Group’s project Senior Team Leader Gias Uddin Talukder at an event held in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building around 3:30pm.
Prof Dr Golam Sarwar and Prof Md Yusuf Ali of FMRT will conduct the research on crab farming.
The research project will be funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
During the event, those present expressed optimism that findings from the research can be used to explore the opportunities in crab farming and marketing. The research will also benefit people involved with the industry.
Those tasked with conducting the research hoped that developing the crab farming industry will make a significant positive impact in earning more foreign currency.
Data collected from the research could also be used as a scientific foundation and reference for setting high level government policies on preservation of crabs and management of this industry.
The researchers will also make an effort reduce the dependency of crab farmers on the nature.
They will also focus on a sustainable method for farming crabs through hatcheries and effective marketing of the product.
Prof Dr Khandaker Anisul Huq of Khulna University and Key Group’s project Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist Mizanur Rahman were present at the deal signing event among many others.
Chief Researcher Dr Golam Sarwar and Keya Group’s Regional Project Manager Sajeda Yesmin also held a PowerPoint presentation highlighting various key points about the crab farming industry and the planned research.
