Gang leader Hamidul killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

RAB officials recovered a local pistol, an imported pistol, five rounds of bullets, and two magazines from the location.

Hamidul Islam, 45, leader of the eponymous Hamidul Bahini, has been killed in a “gunfight” with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Kushia. 

The skirmish took place near the Gorai river dam in an area known as Char Milpara in Kushtia city at around 5am Tuesday. 

According to RAB officials, Hamidul is a notorious terrorist and drug kingpin. His brother and second-in-command Rashedul was also killed in a “gunfight” in 2007.

Two RAB members were injured during the battle.

RAB officials recovered a local pistol, an imported pistol, five rounds of bullets, and two magazines from the location. 

RAB 12 Company Commander M Muhaiminur Rashid said: “We received intelligence that a band of criminals were hiding out in the area close to the Gorai riverbank, and a RAB patrol team conducted an operation there. When the criminals sensed the presence of RAB members, they began shooting at us.

“RAB fired back, and one of them was hit. He was declared dead on arrival after being taken to Kushtia General Hospital,” he added.

According to RAB, Hamidul is a most wanted criminal with many allegations in his name including murder. Two RAB members injured in the “gunfight” have been admitted into hospitals and given treatment.
