Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said there will be no quota system in public services, as declared by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He said: “Regarding the issue of quota in government jobs, the prime minister’s word is final. There will be no quota system in public services.”
The minister made the statement while speaking to reporters at the ministry’s meeting room in the Secretariat on Sunday.
Referring to the quota demonstrators, he said: “Have faith in the prime minister. The gazette will be published on time.
“The activists should not threaten to protest or bring about strikes. The government sympathizes with their cause.”
Demonstrators have long emphasized the need to reform the quota system, which reserves 56% of government jobs for certain groups.
In the face of continued demonstrations, the prime minister on April 11 had announced that the government would take measures to scrap the quota system.
