At least nine people were killed and four others injured by lightning strikes in four districts across the country on Tuesday.
In Sunamganj alone, five people were killed and four others injured when they were struck by lightning bolts.
Nur Hossain, 35, a farmer and son of Mokther Hossain of Bhati Tahirpur village in Tahirpur upazila, died when a thunderbolt hit him while he was harvesting paddy at a field at Shanir Haor around 1pm, said Nandan Kanti Dhar, officer-in-charge of Tahirpur police station.
Shahana Banu, 56, wife of late Hazrat Ali, was killed struck by lightning at a haor when she went there to bring cattle home to Purangaon village of Bishwambharpur upazila in the morning.
In another incident, Surma Begum, 22, daughter of Abdur Rahman of Siddhirpur village in Bishwambharpur upazila, was killed, and Lili Begum, 6, daughter of Fazr Ali, injured by a flash of lightning.
Ferdous Alam, 13, son of Asad Ali of Kathakali village in Doarabazar upazila, died when a thunderbolt hit him while he was fishing at a river around 1:30 pm, said Sushil Chandra Das, officer-in-charge of Doarabazar police station.
Muslim Uddin, 75, a farmer, was killed by a thunderbolt on a makeshift hut where he was resting at a paddy field in Derai upazila.
Meanwhile, three people were injured in yet another incident of lightning at Hatamar village of Fenarbak union in Jamalganj upazila in the morning.
In Habiganj, Zobair Miah, 24, a resident of Muradpur village in Baniachang upazila, was killed after being hit by lightning while harvesting paddy at a haor in the morning.
In Nabiganj uapzila of the same district, Sujon Monda, 30, a worker and son of Kanai Monda hailing from Chunarughat upazila, was killed when a thunderbolt struck him while he was working at a paddy field around 11:30 am.
In Netrakona, Islam Uddin, 65, a farmer from Gazipur, was killed by lightning while harvesting paddy at a field in Khaliajuri upazila around noon.
In Kishoreganj, Fahim Hossain, 12, son of Shahadat Hossain of Majlishpur village in Bajitpur upazila, died in a lightning strike while plucking litchi around 2pm.
In Barishal, a farmer was severely wounded by a lightning bolt while harvesting paddy at a field in Agailjhara upazila around 7am.
Khokon Pramanik, 30, a resident of Baraichora village of Khoksa upazila in Pabna, was rushed to a local hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
An unnatural death case was filed in this connection.
