Tapan Jyoti Chakma among five killed by gunfire
A United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) reformist leader and four others have been killed and at least eight others were injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at them on a highway in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. UPDF Ganatantrik President Tapan Jyoti Chakma, also known as Barma, was killed along with three supporters and the driver of the car in this attack that took place at Friday noon. They were headed to the funeral of Naniarchar Upazila Chairman Shaktimaan Chakma, who was killed on Thursday, from Mahalchhari. Assailants opened fire on the vehicle near the Betchhari Forest Hill area on the Khagrachhari-Rangamati Road around 12pm. Armed forces rescued the injured and took them to the Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital. Bivuranjan Chakma, political secretary of PCJSS (MN Larma), accused UPDF of carrying out the attack. Shaktimaan was shot dead by unidentified assailants on his way to work around 11am on Thursday. He and Tapan Jyoti were among the 19 people accused in a case of abduction of Monty Chakma and Doyasona Chakma, two Hill Women's Federation leaders. Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Ali Ahmed Khan said the dead bodies were being brought to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Among the injured, Mihir Chakma, Arjun Chakma, Archin Chakma and Diganta Chakma were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Shanti Ranjan Chakma, Jibon Chakma, Priti Kumar Chakma and another are being treated at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital. Khagrachhari Sadar doctor Mosharraf Hossain said four critically injured persons were sent to CMCH. Autopsies of those killed were being carried out at the hospital's morgue, he said. In November last year, Tapan Jyoti alias Barma, at that time the head of UPDF's military unit, and his followers announced that they were breaking away from the organization to form UPDF Ganatantrik.
