Upazila chairman shot dead in Rangamati
Rangamati’s Naniarchar Upazila Chairman Shaktimaan Chakma has been shot dead by unidentified assailants. He was gunned down on his way to work around 11am on Thursday. Naniarchar police station Officer-in-Charge, Abdul Latif, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune. Shaktimaan’s associate, Rupam Chakma, who is the JSS (MN Larma group) central committee’s co-organizing secretary, was critically injured during the attack. The body of the deceased chairman has been sent to Naniarchar Health Complex for autopsy. In an immediate reaction, JSS (MN Larma group) accused the rival political platform in the Chittagong Hill Tracts United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) for the assassination. “An armed UPDF group led by Arpan Chakma committed this heinous crime,” said JSS (MN Larma group) Central Committee’s Publicity Secretary Sudhakar Tripura. UPDF spokesperson Niran Chakma rejected the allegation, saying: “We [UPDF] have nothing to do with this [assassination of Shaktimaan Chakma].” Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has condemned the brutal murder of Shaktimaan, and demanded that those responsible for the attack be brought to justice as soon as possible.
