Fifty people, including several policemen, were injured during a clash between CNG-run autorickshaw drivers and police in Shayestaganj upazila of Habiganj Friday morning.
According to local sources, the autorickshaw drivers blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the upazila’s Nachhatpur area following a human chain, protesting a ban on the movement of CNG-run autorickshaws on the highway which was enforced by the police.
The protesters got into a violent clash with police as the latter tried to disperse and prevent them from blocking the road.
The autorickshaw drivers, who sustained bullet injuries in the incident, refused to get admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital fearing that they might be arrested by law enforcers if they go there for treatment.
However, they later received treatments at local clinics and doctors’ chambers.
The injured policemen were admitted to the hospital. Habiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Bidhan Tripura and Additional SP ASM Shamsur Rahman Bhuiyan visited their wounded colleagues at the hospital around 1pm.
“The auto-rickshaw drivers attacked the policemen as they tried to dissuade them from blocking the highway. We cannot tell you the exact number of injured police members,” Shamsur told reporters at the hospital.
