A Rohingya labourer called Md Azam was crushed while illegally mining stone in the Lama upazila of Bandarban.
The incident occurred in the Dolujhiri area of Gojalia union of the upazila at around 5pm Monday.
Azam is the son of Md Zakaria, a Rohingya refugee living in the Modhuchhara Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazaar’s Ukhiya upazila.
Three others have been arrested in this regard. They are Zahedul Islam, 2, Md Nur, 18, and Md Mohsen Ali, 35. Police sent the body to Bandarban morgue for autopsy Tuesday morning.
Local sources said Md Azam and a few other people had been illegally working as labourers at the quarry for a long time. Azam was seriously injured while mining stone on Monday afternoon.
After Azam’s fellow labourers rescued him, they took him to Unique Hospital in Chakaria upazila, where attending doctors announced him dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, Md Hossain Majhi, owner and middleman of the stone quarry, tried to hide the body in order to avoid being charged. He was on his way to Dolujhuri to dump the body Monday night when he was caught at Faitong police check post by Sub-Inspector Md Hanif, who took him to Lama police station.
Lama police station OC Md Anwar Hossain confirmed the arrest of the three fellow workers as well as the identity of the deceased.
