Killers still unidentified 25 months after Tonu murder
The family of Sohagi Jahan Tonu has expressed indignation at the investigators’ failure to identify the girl’s killers after more than two years. Tonu’s mother says she wants Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention to solve the case. The Victoria College student was found raped and murdered at Comilla Mainamati Cantonment on March 20, 2016. Her father Yaar Hossain, an employee of the cantonment board, filed a case with kotwali model police the next day. Even after two post-mortem examinations, the Comilla Medical College forensic department did not specify any reason of the death. In May 2016, the CID told media that semen samples from three men were found on her clothes. A CID team questioned some people at the Comilla Cantonment but did not disclose their names. In November last year, the CID interrogated Tonu’s father Yaar Hossain, mother Anowara Begum, cousins Laizu and Minhaz. Ganajagaran Mancha’s Cumilla unit organizer Khairul Anam Raihan said the CID’s failure to find out the killers show how helpless the general people are. Tonu’s mother claimed that identities of the killers could be known if Sergeant Zahid and his wife were interrogated. “Tonu was found dead after she had gone out for private tuition at Zahid’s house,” she said. “Her father has fallen sick and is currently on a three-month leave. Who will look after us?” Investigation officer of the case Senior Police Superintendent of CID Jalal Uddin Ahmed said they will interrogate some others again and the process would take two to three months. “We’re working to identify the killers,” he said.
