Man accused of child rape killed in Satkhira police crossfire

A man accused of child rape has died in crossfire with the police in Satkhira. Two policemen were injured in the incident. The deceased, Sohag Sardar, was accused of raping a nine-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Saturday night at Hijaldi village of Chandanpur union. The police have recovered a single fire gun and bullets from the scene. Satkhira Kalaroa police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Biplap Kumar Nath, said: “Sohag Sardar raped a third-grade student of Boalia Government Primary School. The child’s grandmother filed a case in this regard, accusing Sohag.” He said the police went to take Sohag into custody around 2:30am in Hijaldi village. Sohag shot at the police when he saw them and the police fired back. After the crossfire, Sohag was found gravely wounded in a field. The police quickly took him to a hospital in Kalaroa. Dr Shafikul Islam declared him dead at the hospital. Later, his body was sent to the sadar hospital morgue. The OC also said: “In the crossfire, two police officers were injured. The injured are Sub-Inspector Ahsan and Sub-Inspector Sagar. They have been given medical care.” According to the statement of the case filed against Sohag, on Saturday the girl came back from school and went to take a bath in the pond beside her grandmother’s house. Finding her by herself, Sohag held her down and raped her. Hearing her screams, a few women came to the pond. Sohag ran away after he saw them approaching. The girl was bleeding and was admitted to a hospital in Kalaroa, and later to Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
