Police claimed to have arrested a former army man and a barber for their alleged ties with the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Chapainawabganj in the early hours of Sunday.
According to police, the duo, Jahid alias Ripon from Ramchandrapur Hat area of Ranihati union and Md Saddam Hossain from Chapainawabganj municipality, were arrested with explosives and jihadi literature books in their possession.
Police said Jahid and Saddam were detained during a raid inside a house in Ramchandrapur Hat area of Ranihati union under Sadar upazila, where the JMB members were allegedly holding a secret meeting.
During a press briefing on Sunday, Chapainawabganj Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) Abdul Hai Sarker said they were tipped off about a meeting of 15-16 JMB members, who have been making plans of creating chaos at different important points of the district town.
Based on the information, police conducted the drive and arrested two members, while the others fled. Total 400gm of gunpowder and 12 jihadi literature books were seized at the same time.
A case in this connection has been filed at the Chapainawabganj Sadar police station.
