A robber has been killed in a gunfight with police in Raipur of Daudkandi, Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Rubayet Hossain Babul of the Inter-City robber group. He was the son of Imam Hossain of Birampur village of Madhabdi upazila.
Four members of the police were injured in the gunfight as well.
OC of Daudkandi Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, said: “Rubayet and Maruf Ahmed Lablu were arrested on April 16, from Uttara, in connection with a covered van which was hijacked on April 10 from Daudkandi.
“The covered van was loaded with export oriented RMG products. It was later recovered from Dhaka,” Mizanur said.
Mizanur added, “According to the confession of the two suspects, a police team went with Babul and Maruf to Raipur on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, to nab the others involved in the hijacking.”
“Sensing the police presence, the robbers fired at them. While trying to escape, Babul lost his life as he got caught in the firing exchange,” Mizanur further added.
The dead body was sent to Comilla Medical College for autopsy.
The injured police personnel are Inspector (Investigation) of Daudkandi police station, Nurul Islam Majumder, Assistant Sub-Inspector Pordip Das, Constable Ibrahim and Shorab.
Police recovered a pipe gun and bullets from the scene.
Police said Rubayet had 22 cases filed against him, including eight for robbery. Lablu is the son of Aynal Haque of Shibchar upazila and has five cases filed against him.
A case is being filed with Daudkandi police station.
