The House on Thursday passed a bill to form Rangpur Metropolitan Police with a view to improving the law and order situation and strengthening the police force in the metropolis to ensure public security there.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan moved the bill titled ''Rangpur Metropolitan Police Bill, 2018" that was passed by a voice vote.
In November last year, the Cabinet approved a draft law in this connection, which was placed in parliament on February 11 this year.
The bill empowered the police force in the town to hand down pecuniary punishment and jail-terms for violation of laws, subject to types of crimes.
The draft law was framed in accordance of the existing Sylhet Metropolitan Police Act 2009 and Barisal Metropolitan Police Act 2009.
As per the bill, police members will have to execute orders of the authorities concerned to address any criminal offences and prevent public nuisances.
In 2012, Rangpur City Corporation was formed with a 203-square-kilometre area and nearly 800,000 dwellers.
