One killed in Magura in power struggle
A clash between two groups vying for power in Sripur upazila of Magura has left one person dead, several injured, and 20 houses damaged. The deceased Anisur Rahman, 30, was from Mortazapur. Two of the injured, 38-year-old Inlal Mollah and 35-year-old Kuddus Mollah, have been taken to a hospital in Magura in critical condition, with others admitted to local clinics. Anisur’s brother Ziarul Mollah said: “The clash was over a prolonged battle for power in the villages of Kajli, Kabilpur, and Mortazapur, between rival gangs, Hannan Member Group and Paban-Rafiqul Group. “On Saturday morning the rivalry reached fever pitch and the two groups clashed in the Kajli-Kabilpur area with weapons. In the ensuing fight, Anisur was stabbed by an opponent and succumbed to his wounds on the way to hospital,” he added. Local sources said when news of the murder spread, Hannan Member Group goons attacked several houses of their rivals, damaging any property they did not loot, and physically assaulting some women. Upon receiving word, police arrived on the scene and fired a few warning shots to disperse the mob. They have been on high alert since, to prevent any more untoward incidents. Magura Additional Superintendent of Police, Md Tariqul Islam, stayed at the scene to bring the situation under control. “Following the incidents, the area is currently deserted. However, we are taking measures to capture the perpetrators,” he said.
