881 government primary schools in Comilla lacking headmasters

Update : 07 Apr 2018, 09:43 PM
A total 881 Government Primary Schools in 16 upazilas of Comilla are running without headmasters, hampering the academic and administrative activities of the schools. The 881 posts have been lying vacant since the retirement of some teachers, due to complications in the recruitment process. Sources at the District Primary Education Office said there are 2,102 primary schools in Comilla. Among them, the post of headmaster was vacant in 881 schools, while the post of assistant teacher was vacant in 837 schools. According to the source, there are such vacant posts in the upazilas of Adarsha Sadar Laksham, Debidwar, Muradnagar, Daudkandi, Barura, Burichong, Chandina, Homna, Nangolkot, Meghna, Manoharganj, and Titash. The school authorities concerned are currently tasking senior assistant teachers with the academic responsibilities of headmasters, overburdening them in the process. As a result of this, these teachers are unable to carry out their regular classes properly. Sources said 35% of headmaster posts in government primary schools are filled through recruitment, while the remaining 65% are filled via promotion. In some cases, these posts have been lying vacant for seven to eight years. When contacted, District Assistant Education Officer Kazi Mafiz Uddin said the process of filling up the vacant posts with experienced assistant teachers is underway at the Directorate of Primary Education, and that necessary steps will be taken after the list of appointees arrives from the DPE.
