Abandoned mortar shell blast kills woman in Tangail
A woman has been killed and three others critically injured due to the explosion of an abandoned mortar shell in Tangail’s Ghatail upazila. Moyna Khatun, 23, died on the spot when the blast occurred at her home at the upazila’s Maladhi Maidharchala village Wednesday afternoon. The injured – Joynuddin, 60, Abdur Razzak, 50, and Sharif, 35 – were admitted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Ghatail. Police and locals said Moyna had been collecting used ammunition shells from the army’s Maidharchala firing range under Ghatail Cantonment for a long time. On Wednesday, she had routinely collected several abandoned mortar shells from the firing range around 12pm. One of them was, however, unused and it exploded when she dropped the sack carrying the shells after bringing them home. The blast killed her on the spot, police said. Ghatail police station Sub-Inspector Md Minhaj said Moyna’s body was later recovered from the scene and sent to Tangail General Hospital for autopsy.
