Man accused of stabbing SI killed in 'gunfight'

A man accused of stabbing a police officer has been killed in an alleged gunfight with the Detective Branch (DB) in Mymensingh. DB Officer-in-charge Ashiqur Rahman said the gunfight took place around 2am on Wednesday at Gouripur. Ujjal Mia, a suspected drug peddler, allegedly stabbed Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman Asad on March 28 during a police raid at Gouripur. Asad is being treated at CMH. DB was tasked with investigating the case filed over the stabbing. Ashiqur said they raided Gouripur to arrest the accused. A skirmish ensued when Ujjal and his cohorts opened fire and hurled bombs at them. “Ujjal was hit by a bullet when we fired in self-defence,” Ashiqur claimed. Doctors pronounced the man dead when he was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH). Gouripur police station’s Officer-in-charge Delowar Ahmed denied having any knowledge about the gunfight. MMCH emergency medical officer Dr Ashesh Kumar Roy said Ujjal had died before he was brought to the hospital. “He has a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest,” Ashesh said.This article was first published on banglatribune.com
