Three people have been arrested and sent to jail in Khagrachhari following a court order in a case filed over the murder of Md Rasel, a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist.
Police have not revealed the names of the detainees, who are among the suspects in the murder.
Sources in Khagrachhari police said they were looking into all possible reasons behind the murder - i.e. political conflict, internal strife, establishment of supremacy in the locality, juvenile crimes, narcotics, etc.
Khagrachhari Sadar police station OC Md Shahadat Hossain Tito said a multipronged probe was in progress, but declined to share the details.
Source said several police teams were working on the case, which had been filed with Khagrachhari Sadar police station by Rasel’s mother Khodeja Begum on March 25, a day after the murder.
She named 19 people, including Khagrachhari Municipality Mayor Rafiqul Alam, in the case alongside at least 15 unknown others.
On March 24, some unidentified miscreants, allegedly Rasel's rivals, swooped on the 18-year-old Chhatra League activist, native of Kadamtali Harinathpur, and stabbed him indiscriminately in Khagrachhari town’s PDB area in the evening, police said quoting witnesses.
He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, OC Tito said.
Meanwhile, two groups of the local Chhatra League unit held separate press conferences on Thursday and Friday over the murder.
The first group, followers of district unit President Tiko Chakma, claimed that Rasel’s murder was politically motivated, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.
The second faction, followers of district unit General Secretary Jahir Uddin Firoz, called for the withdrawal of the “false" case and arrest of the real perpetrators.
