Jessore sub-inspector accused of deception, attempted murder

A police official in Jessore has been accused of an attempted murder and swindling a man out of around Tk6 lakh with a false promise of helping him get a job the police force. The man’s niece raised the allegations against Sub-inspector Anil Mukharjee of Chaugachha police station in the district, at a press briefing at Jessore Press Club on Thursday. Anil took Tk590,000 from her maternal uncle, Md Shahjalal of the upazila’s Jatrapur village, with a promise that he would help Shahjalal get a job in the police service. Idu Member of Raghunathpur village in Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj upazila and his cohort Omar Ali were also involved in the matter and persuaded Shahjalal into giving the money to Anil, she said. “The recruitment process concluded on March 1, but Anil did not keep his promise. As we asked him to return the money, the sub-inspector, some of his colleagues, Idu and Omar threatened and told us not to ask for the money,” Shahjalal’s niece added. She also accused SI Anil and his men of assaulting them while they were returning to Chaugachha from Jessore town some days ago. Locals rescued and took them to a hospital, she said, adding that the accused people also hacked Shahjalal with sharp weapons after he had filed a case with a Jessore court over the matter. Shahjalal’s niece demanded the money be returned and punitive measures be taken against the accused. SI Anil refuted the allegations, terming them baseless.
