10th grader murdered in Manikganj
A 10th grader succumbed to injuries he sustained in a beating, while on the way to Dhaka from Manikganj Sadar Hospital Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Md Rokib, a student of Manikganj Government Technical School and College. Manikganj police station OC Rokibuzzaman said Rokib had left his home after being called by a friend in the evening that day. Later, relatives found him severely injured and took him to Manikganj Sadar Hospital for treatment. After his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka, but Rokib died en route. A case was filed with Manikganj police accusing six people over the incident. Only one has so far been detained. OC Rokibuzzaman said the motive behind the murder could be either drugs or a love affair. "We will know more after investigaton." He also said police already detained Rokib's friend Johnny in connection to the crime, while alleged main assailant Shakil Ahmed alias Mithu is still on the run. According to his family members, Mithu had lured Rokib into a corn field near his house, where he was ambushed by several people and hacked with sharp weapons at least 15 times. Nearby locals rescued him after hearing his cry for help and rushed him to the hospital. Locals also said after Mithu's relationship with his former girlfriend went sour, the girl had begun flirting with Rokib. This caused a rift between the two boys and could have led to the attack on Rokib and his subsequent murder. Moreover, all the suspects involved in the incident as well as the victim were drug abusers, so that may also have led to the murder, many said. Mithu's family apparently has also fled the area as a police raid found their house empty and locked.
