Two cops withdrawn after attempt to pick up jeweller under false drugs charge
Three policemen, including a sub-inspector (SI), of Chougachha police station have allegedly attempted to pick up a jeweller from his shop under a false drugs charge in Jessore’s Chougachha upazila. Following a massive protest from the gold traders of Swarna Patti at Chougachha Bazar after the incident on Tuesday, two of the policemen in question, SI Kamruzzaman and Constable Nazmul Islam, were withdrawn and closed, respectively, said the district’s Superintendent of Police Anisur Rahman. He, however, told reporters that Nazmul was closed and attached to Jessore Police Lines over another incident. “But Kamruzzaman is facing a judicial case over the Swarna Patti incident,” he added. Meanwhile, hundreds of traders of Chougachha Bazar have closed their shops indefinitely in protest against the incident and demanded withdrawal of Chougachha police OC Khandaker Shamim Uddin and other officers who were involved. Witnesses said SI Kamruzzaman, Assistant SI Akbar Ali and Constable Nazmul had entered jewellery shop Senko Jewellers Chougachha Bazar around 12pm and tried to whisk away Rajan Sen alias Bappi, son of the shop’s owner Robin Sen, claiming he had banned drug yaba on him. As leaders of the market’s traders’ association and others prevented them from taking him away without providing any proof to back their claim, Kamruzzaman had threatened with his service pistol. After that, the agitated traders closed the shop’s collapsible gate and confined him inside, while the two other policemen managed to flee the scene. As the protest gathered momentum, another police team led by Chougachha Municipality Mayor Nur Uddin Al Mamun Himel and OC Shamim arrived there and rescued Kamruzzaman. He was then taken to Chougachha police station. Around 2pm, the traders association announced to keep their shops closed until OC Shamim and the three policemen were withdrawn. Until Tuesday evening, the market was closed as traders continued their demonstration. In 2016, two other policemen, including an SI, were withdrawn too after they were caught while trying to frame a trader at Chougachha Bazar under a false yaba dealing charge. That incident was caught on CCTV camera. Last year, three policemen were also withdrawn after they framed a man with phensedyl at the upazila’s Kharincha Bazar.
