A robbery has taken place at the Baliadangi residence of Thakurgaon District Awami League President and Member of Parliament (MP)-2 Dabirul Islam.
The robbery took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning, said Dabirul’s younger brother and former upazila chairman Md Ali.
"Eight rooms inside the house were ransacked," Md Ali said, adding that gold and jewellery were among the valuables looted.
In the initial investigation by police, the tools used in the robbery were discovered in a nearby bamboo grove beside a pond.
Baliadangi police station OC Mustafizur Rahman said: "We are very sorry that such an incident took place inside an MP's house. We are conducting an investigation into the matter. We cannot disclose any more information in light of the on-going investigation.”
After visiting the site, District Commissioner Akhtarauzzaman assured that he had asked police to bring the culprits under the law as soon as possible.
Dabirul Islam is currently abroad on a trip. He has served as the elected MP of the Thakurgaon-2 parliamentary seat six times, and is the chairman of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
