A suspected gang member has been killed during a gunfight between two Rohingya groups at Noyapara refugee camp in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hossain Ali alias Bailla, 32, son of camp resident Bachha Ali.
According to police sources, the gunfight ensued as the two Rohingya gangs attempted to establish dominance at the camp at around 6am.
They added that Hossain Ali is suspected to have been an associate of Rohingya gang leader Abdul Hakim.
Two alleged Rohingya gang members– brothers Abdur Razzak, 26, and Abdus Salam, 32– have been arrested from the hill areas near the camp in connection with the gunfight.
Confirming the incident, Teknaf police station OC Ranjit Kumar Barua said: “Dacoit Hossain Ali died during a gunfight between two gangs of Rohingya robbers, as they tried to establish dominance at the camp.”
He added that a team of police conducted a drive in the area soon after being informed about the incident.
“Sensing our presence, gang member Nurul Alam, who had sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight, fled the camp area,” he said.
Nurul Alam is one of the prime accused in a case filed with the police station regarding an arms robbery at an Ansar camp, he further said.
The body of Hossain Ali has been sent to Cox’s Bazar for autopsy.
“We will conduct further drives in the hill areas near the camp to find any others involved,” the OC said.
