Officials thwart child marriage after call on helpline 109
Officials of Gurudaspur upazila administration in Natore have stopped the marriage of an underage girl, promptly responding to a complaint made on the women abuse helpline number 109 over the matter. Gurudaspur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Monor Hossain said he was informed by National Helpline Centre for Violence against Women and Children that Tania Khatun, an SSC examinee from Dharabaria High School, of Dadua village were going to be had married off to a man from the neighbouring village. Based on the complaint, the UNO along with a team of Gurudaspur police station reached the address of the girl on Sunday noon. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the girl's father absconded. The UNO later summoned some of the girl's relatives, including her uncle Abdul Karim, to the upazila administration's office where the latter signed a deponent on a stamp paper of Tk300 denomination, making commitments not to continue with the marriage arrangements. The helpline has been set up to prevent violence against women and children, act against child marriage and prevent sexual harassment. Started in June 2012, the helpline is maintained by the National Helpline Centre for Violence against Women and Children.
