Teachers Association of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUSTTA) and Sammilita Sangskritik Jote have staged separate demonstrations at the university campus on Sunday, protesting the attack on the noted writer and SUST teacher Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal.
Around 9am, SUST students began a massive protest rally in the campus premises.
Moreover, SUSTTA organized a human chain in front of the university’s central library around 11am.
Students and teachers also took part in a signature campaign -- protesting the attack.
Students, under the banner of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, formed a human chain in front of central library around 12pm. They pressed three demands in a press release -- proper investigation regarding the attack on Zafar Iqbal, speedy trail of the attacker and security on the campus.

Students also demanded strict regulation of outsiders coming into the campus, quick construction of a boundary wall around the campus and appropriate measures without harassing anyone in the name of security.
Later in the evening, the students brought out a candlelight procession.
Earlier on Saturday, leaders of SUST Press Club strongly condemned and protested the attack on the noted writer.
In a joint statement, the club’s President Abdullah Al Mansur and General Secretary Foyzullah Wasif demanded capital punishment of the perpetrator.
CU teachers condemn brutal attack on Zafar Iqbal
Condemning the heinous attack on Zafar Iqbal, faculty members from the Chittagong University Teachers’ Association (CUTA) formed a human chain on Sunday at the university campus.
The teachers also demanded exemplary punishment of the masterminds behind the attack.
While addressing the human chain program, CU Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shireen Akhter said that the premeditated attack was launched to silence the voice of progressive forces in society.
“The people involved with such attacks should be identified and brought to justice,” Shireen said.
Prof Dr Kamrul Huda, acting registrar of CU, said the brutal attack was launched to gag the voice of the freethinkers.
The human chain was attended by Arts Faculty Dean Prof Dr Sekander Chowdhury, Biological Science Faculty Dean Prof Dr Mahbubur Rahman, Science Faculty Dean Prof Dr Shafiul Alam, Business Faculty Dean Prof AFM Aurangzeb, Prof Dr Mihir Kumar Roy and Prof Benu Kumar Dey, among others.
Besides, left-leaning students under the banner of Progressive Students' Alliance, Chittagong University Journalists’ Association (CUJA) and a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) also brought out processions protesting at the attack.

Zafar Iqbal, who was seriously injured in the knife attack on the campus on Saturday afternoon, is now undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
SUST Assistant Proctor Abu Hena Pahil said a young man, aged around 24-25, swooped on Zafar Iqbal around 5:40pm while he was delivering his speech on the closing ceremony of a two-day celebration programme, “Robofight,” organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Mukta Mancha.
The celebrated writer was first taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) where doctors said he was out of danger.
Later, Zafar Iqbal was airlifted to CMH in Dhaka after 10pm following the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Protest in RU
Teachers and students at Rajshahi University (RU) demanded immediate action against Prof Zafar Iqbal's attacker on Sunday.
Speaking at a demonstration organized by RU Central Cultural Group in front of the university library around 12pm, Prof Malay Bhowmik said: "The young individuals who are involved in these attacks are brainwashed; they are insane. We are failing to stop our youth from getting brainwashed. No steps are being taken to promote scientific thinking or social awareness in our society."

The RU unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League brought out a procession in protest of the attack on the university campus.
Later, in a rally following the procession, Chhatra League leaders said the anti-liberation forces were once again trying to stifle the voice of the intellectuals by attacking Prof Zafar Iqbal.
