SUST has a no tolerance policy for ragging
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has expelled two senior students and punished 21 others for ragging six freshmen students overnight.
A syndicate meeting on Wednesday chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed saw Ashik Uddin Himel and Hamidur Rahman Rangan expelled from the university.
Among the others, Mahmudul Hasan and Shah Riaz Zaman have been suspended for a year and fined Tk10,000; Istiaque Ahmed has been expelled for five months and fined Tk10,000; Bablu Marma, Adri Das, Abu Redwan Khan, Umar Alam Sarkar, Rony Sarkar have been fined Tk6,000 and issued a warning; Ahmed Hasib, Debashish Basu, Mahbub Ibrahim, Shahidul Alam, Al Amin, Dipto Taru, Ashikul Enam, Raisul Bari Sifat, Sajibur Rahman, have been fined Tk3,000 and warned as well. Two more – Nazmus Sakib , Shafikul Islam – have been issued only warnings.

The incident of overnight ragging took place on the night of Thursday, February 15 and ended around 6am the next day.
The freshmen were forced to strip down, cover their privates with paper and take pictures. These photos were uploaded to the social media with obscene captions but were taken down several hours later, according to the sources.
The victims and most of the culprits involved are from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, with just one of the seniors from the Political Studies department
