Jakiganj Upazila Chairman and Sylhet BNP Vice President Iqbal Ahmed, who has been widely criticized for controversial activities, allegedly severely beat a boy over a trifling matter in Haidraband village on Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Johirul Islam Munna, a fifth-grader from Sarsinghopur Government Primary School.
According to locals, the upazila chairman was going through the village in his official car on Wednesday afternoon. At the time, Iqbal Ahmed became enraged when the boy touched the glass of his car and beat him as a result.
Later, locals rescued the child and took him to Jakiganj Health Complex for treatment.
The upazilla chairman admitted that he slapped the child as he touched the car “with dirty hands,” though he also claimed that the beating was not as severe as it had been portrayed.
“Some people are trying to manipulate the incident,” he said.
Earlier, Iqbal Ahmed was sued in Sylhet in October last year, after he posted a photograph of a primary school teacher who was sleeping while a test was underway on social media.
