Blast, infighting mar Chhatra League’s conference in Chittagong
Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Chittagong north district unit conference has been marred by the explosion of a crude bomb and factional feuds. The incident took place at Engineers Institute around 12:15pm on Tuesday in presence of Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain. The crude bomb was blasted when Chhatra League central committee Vice-President Saquib Hossain was delivering his speech. The explosion triggered a mad scramble and the people began to run for shelter inside the venue. At one stage, some leaders and activists of the ruling party's student front fought pitched battles among themselves and exchanged blows. They were rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital. “Those who launched the attack were outsiders. They do not belong to the organization,” Minister Mosharraf said, ordering police to arrest the attackers. His calls for resuming the program went unheeded. The area has been tense for the last several days ahead of the council. Fazle Karim Chowdhury MP, Hasan Mahmud MP, Chittagong Awami League north district chief Nurul Alam Chowdhury, Chhatra League General Secretary Zakir Hossain, among others, were present at the council. All the guests left the venue as the council could not be resumed till 1pm. Abu Tayyab, the general secretary of Chhatra League’s Chittagong district north unit, said, “Jamaat-Shibir men blasted crude bomb and marred the peaceful council as the senior leaders were speaking against the forces of anti-liberation. The first session of the council was postponed and the second session will commence in the afternoon.”
